Cole Porter (1891-1964) foi um dos grandes compositores norte-americanos e compôs "Begin the Beguine" em 1935 durante um cruzeiro. O "beguine" é um ritmo semelhante à rumba, mais lento. A música não fez grande sucesso até que o band leader Artie Shaw (1910-2004) e o arranjador Jerry Gray (1915-1976) fizeram um arranjo da música que se tornou um grande sucesso.
